Its origin is unusual even by meme coin standards: the concept emerged from ‘Infinite Backrooms’, a project by researcher Andy Ayrey in which an AI agent called Truth Terminal generated ideas in unsupervised conversation with another AI instance. A fart-themed cryptocurrency was one of the resulting ideas, and an anonymous developer launched it on Pump.fun shortly after.
Fartcoin launched as an SPL token on the Solana blockchain with a fixed supply of approximately 1 billion tokens. All tokens entered circulation at launch, with no presale, team allocation, or pre-mine. This fair launch structure is common for tokens created through Pump.fun's bonding curve model.
Fartcoin gained early visibility after Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Marc Andreessen made a $50,000 grant to the Truth Terminal project, and after prominent crypto commentators added it to public watchlists. From a starting market capitalisation of roughly $1.2 million, it rose to an all-time high of approximately $2.48–$2.52 in January 2025, briefly exceeding a $1 billion market capitalisation. Since then, Fartcoin has traded well below its peak, falling more than 90% before recovering some ground.
