Where it’s held matters Crypto bought on an exchange typically sits on the exchange’s balance sheet. Institutional custody holds your ALGO separately a structural difference worth understanding before you buy.
How custody worksBroker vs exchange Buying Algorand through a broker works differently from a self-serve exchange order book. Understanding how the two differ helps you choose the path that fits how you want to buy.

About OTC tradingA plain-English look at what it is, how it works, and what it's used for — so you can understand the asset before you buy.
Algorand (ALGO) is a Layer-1 blockchain founded in 2017 by Silvio Micali an MIT professor and Turing Award-winning cryptographer and launched on mainnet in June 2019. It was built with the explicit goal of solving the blockchain trilemma: achieving security, scalability, and decentralisation simultaneously, rather than trading one off against the others. Algorand has maintained 100% uptime since its mainnet launch.
How the
Algorand
works
Algorand uses a consensus mechanism called Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS) a design that distinguishes it from the delegated or bonded validator systems used by most other proof-of-stake networks. In PPoS, the proposer and validators for each block are selected randomly and secretly from among all ALGO holders, with selection probability proportional to their stake. This means any ALGO holder regardless of how much they hold is eligible to participate in consensus, making the system highly democratic and resistant to centralisation. The random selection is cryptographically verifiable but unpredictable in advance, making it resistant to targeted attacks. Because validators are not known ahead of time, there is no opportunity for bad actors to coordinate against them before a block is produced. Algorand achieves block finality in approximately 2.8 seconds with transaction fees that are a fraction of a cent. The network processes over 1,000 transactions per second without requiring Layer-2 solutions all activity occurs natively on the base layer.
What
Algorand
is used for
ALGO is the native currency of the Algorand network, used to pay transaction fees and participate in consensus through staking. Algorand’s combination of fast finality, low fees, and a highly accessible consensus mechanism has made it particularly attractive for financial applications, government-issued digital currencies, and real-world asset tokenisation. Several central banks and government agencies have built or piloted digital currency infrastructure on Algorand. The network also hosts a growing DeFi ecosystem, native token standards, and smart contract capabilities that support a broad range of decentralised applications. Algorand has been noted for its post-quantum cryptography research with the network actively exploring Falcon signatures and other quantum-resistant cryptographic methods, positioning it as a candidate for long-term infrastructure in environments where quantum computing may eventually pose a risk to conventional cryptographic schemes.
Pure Proof of Stake. Any ALGO holder can participate in consensus not just large validators or delegated nodes. Block proposers are selected randomly and verifiably from all stakeholders, making the network highly democratic and resistant to capture. Instant finality. Algorand blocks achieve finality in approximately 2.8 seconds. There are no forks and no probabilistic finality once a block is added, it is final. Fixed maximum supply. All 10 billion ALGO were minted at genesis. No new tokens can be created. Distribution is winding down, with ~90% of supply already in circulation as of mid-2026. 100% uptime. The Algorand network has maintained continuous operation without downtime since its June 2019 mainnet launch a notable milestone for a Layer-1 blockchain. Carbon negative. Algorand does not use proof-of-work mining. The network has been certified carbon negative, making it one of the most energy-efficient Layer-

DCE100856266-001You can buy Algorand through Uptrade with the help of a dedicated broker. Rather than trading on a self-serve exchange, you work directly with a broker who guides the purchase from start to finish and settles your ALGO into institutional custody.
There’s no single right way it depends on how much you’re buying and how hands-on you want to be. Buying through a broker suits people who want guidance rather than a self-serve order book, larger purchases, or institutional custody. Compare broker and exchange to see what fits your situation.

Yes. Larger purchases are handled through OTC execution, which is designed to fill size without the slippage that a large order can cause on an exchange order book.
A broker handles the trade for you quote, execution, and settlement rather than leaving you to navigate an order book alone. You get a direct point of contact and your ALGO settles into institutional custody.
