General considerations not advice. How you act on them depends on your own circumstances.

Crypto is volatile

Crypto is volatile Sui’s price can move sharply in both directions sometimes within a single trading session. It’s an asset class to approach with capital you’re prepared to see fluctuate in value. General information only not a prediction or recommendation.

Where it's held matters

Where it’s held matters Crypto bought on an exchange typically sits on the exchange’s balance sheet. Institutional custody holds your SUI separately a structural difference worth understanding before you buy.

How custody works

Broker vs exchange

Broker vs exchange Buying Sui through a broker works differently from a self-serve exchange order book. Understanding how the two differ helps you choose the path that fits how you want to buy.

Sui

A plain-English look at what it is, how it works, and what it's used for, so you can understand the asset before you buy.

Sui (SUI) is a Layer-1 blockchain launched in May 2023 by Mysten Labs a team of former Meta engineers who previously worked on the Diem blockchain project and the Move programming language. Sui is built around an object-centric data model and parallel transaction execution, designed to deliver high throughput and sub-second finality at a scale suited to consumer applications, gaming, and complex digital asset management.

How
Sui
works

Sui’s defining architectural choice is its object-centric model. Where most blockchains treat the network’s state as a shared ledger of accounts and balances, Sui represents every asset — every coin, token, NFT, or contract resource — as its own distinct object with a unique ID, owner, and type. Because most transactions only touch objects owned by the sender, Sui can execute them in parallel rather than sequentially, dramatically increasing throughput without sacrificing security. For transactions that do involve shared objects — those accessible by multiple parties — Sui uses the Mysticeti consensus protocol, a proof-of-stake mechanism that finalises blocks in under half a second. Validators are selected through a delegated proof-of-stake system in which SUI holders delegate their stake to validators they trust, earning a share of transaction fees as rewards. This combination of parallel execution for simple transactions and fast consensus for complex ones allows Sui to process hundreds of transactions per second in real-world conditions, a meaningful performance advantage for applications that require rapid, high-frequency on-chain activity.

What
Sui
is used for

SUI is the native currency of the Sui network and serves two primary functions: paying gas fees for transactions and smart contract interactions, and staking to participate in network security and earn validator rewards. Sui has attracted a growing ecosystem of decentralised applications across DeFi, gaming, and digital asset management. Its object-centric model is particularly suited to gaming, where every in-game item is naturally an asset with an owner, and Sui handles those natively without requiring complex smart contract workarounds. DeepBook, Sui’s native on-chain order book, provides liquidity infrastructure for DeFi applications built on the network, and Sui also supports zkLogin, a feature that allows users to authenticate with familiar Web2 accounts such as Google or Apple, lowering the barrier to entry for mainstream users accessing on-chain applications.

Key characteristics

Object-centric model. Every asset on Sui is a distinct programmable object. This design enables parallel transaction execution for the majority of activity, delivering high throughput without architectural compromises.

Sub-second finality. The Mysticeti consensus protocol finalises blocks in under 500 milliseconds making Sui one of the faster Layer-1 networks for time-sensitive applications.

Move programming language. Sui is built using Move a language designed with formal verification and asset safety as core properties, reducing the risk of common smart contract vulnerabilities.

Fixed maximum supply. SUI has a hard cap of 10 billion tokens. No additional tokens can be created beyond this amount. Distribution continues gradually on a multi-year vesting schedule.

Delegated Proof of Stake. SUI holders can delegate their stake to validators to participate in network security and earn a share of transaction fees without needing to run infrastructure themselves.

FAQ

Sui

Where can I buy Sui?
You can buy Sui through Uptrade with the help of a dedicated broker. Rather than trading on a self-serve exchange, you work directly with a broker who guides the purchase from start to finish and settles your SUI into institutional custody.
What’s the best way to buy Sui?+
There’s no single right way it depends on how much you’re buying and how hands-on you want to be. Buying through a broker suits people who want guidance rather than a self-serve order book, larger purchases, or institutional custody. Compare broker and exchange to see what fits your situation.
How is my Sui kept secure?+
Your Sui is held in institutional custody secured by Fireblocks, using multi-party computation and hardware isolation and every transaction requires direct broker-led approval.
Can I buy a large amount of Sui?+
Yes. Larger purchases are handled through OTC execution, which is designed to fill size without the slippage that a large order can cause on an exchange order book.
How is buying through a broker different?+
A broker handles the trade for you quote, execution, and settlement rather than leaving you to navigate an order book alone. You get a direct point of contact and your SUI settles into institutional custody.
Do I need crypto experience to buy Sui?+
No. Many Uptrade clients are buying crypto for the first time. Your broker walks you through every step, so there’s nothing you need to know in advance.
Is Uptrade regulated?+
Uptrade is registered with AUSTRAC as a Digital Currency Exchange Provider (DCE100856266-001) and operates in compliance with its regulatory obligations.
