Where it’s held matters Crypto bought on an exchange typically sits on the exchange’s balance sheet. Institutional custody holds your ONDO separately a structural difference worth understanding before you buy.
How custody worksBroker vs exchange Buying Ondo through a broker works differently from a self-serve exchange order book. Understanding how the two differ helps you choose the path that fits how you want to buy.

Ondo Finance is a real-world asset (RWA) tokenisation protocol that brings institutional-grade financial products on-chain including tokenised US Treasuries, money market funds, and equities. Its governance token, ONDO, is an ERC-20 token built on Ethereum. Founded in 2021, Ondo has grown into one of the largest tokenised asset platforms in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, with over $3 billion in total value locked across more than a dozen blockchain networks as of mid-2026.
How the
Ondo
works
Ondo Finance operates as a full-stack platform for bringing traditional financial assets onto public blockchains. Its core products are tokenised representations of conservative, yield-bearing instruments primarily US government securities and money market funds that have historically been inaccessible to on-chain users. The platform’s flagship products are OUSG (Ondo Short-Term US Government Bond Fund) and USDY (US Dollar Yield), a yield-bearing stablecoin-like instrument backed by short-term US Treasuries. These products are structured using offshore special purpose vehicles, regulated broker-dealers, and legal wrappers designed to make real-world asset tokenisation compliant with existing financial regulations. USDY targets non-US offshore users, while OUSG is built for institutional and accredited investors. In 2024, Ondo expanded into Ondo Global Markets a platform enabling the tokenisation of individual stocks and ETFs from major equity markets. By May 2026, this platform had accumulated over $1.5 billion in TVL and counted assets from major global asset managers among its listed products.
What
Ondo
is used for
ONDO is used for governance participation within the Ondo Finance protocol. Beyond governance, the token has no direct yield or fee-sharing mechanism its value is primarily driven by the growth and adoption of the broader Ondo Finance platform. The protocol itself enables a meaningful use case: giving on-chain users access to regulated, yield-bearing financial products that were previously available only through traditional brokerage accounts. For institutional participants, Ondo provides a compliant pathway to deploy capital into US Treasuries and equities through blockchain infrastructure. Ondo is also developing a dedicated settlement chain Ondo Chain targeting institutional RWA infrastructure, with mainnet targeted in 2026. This would expand the protocol’s role from a product layer on top of existing blockchains to a foundational settlement layer for tokenised traditional finance.
RWA tokenisation. Ondo brings US Treasuries, money market funds, and equities on-chain as programmable tokens using regulated legal structures to maintain compliance while enabling blockchain-native access. Compliance-first design. Unlike many DeFi protocols, Ondo operates with regulated broker-dealers, offshore SPVs, and formal legal wrappers. Its products are designed to satisfy institutional compliance requirements. Fixed total supply. ONDO has a maximum supply of 10 billion tokens, all created at the January 2024 token generation event. No new tokens can be issued beyond this amount. Multi-chain deployment. Ondo’s products are accessible across more than a dozen blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Solana, and others making its tokenised assets available to a broad range of on-chain users. Governance token. ONDO grants holders voting rights on protocol decisions, including asset listings, risk parameters, and treasury allocations. It does not currently confer a direct claim on protocol fees.
